Signs You Have Bird Mites
- Uncomfortable biting sensation, especially at night or after sitting near a window, bed or ceiling
- Small itchy red lumps or a rash on arms, neck, face and legs — often in lines or clusters
- Mites visible as slow-moving specks of dust around windowsills, skirting boards, beds and ceiling cornices
- Recent bird nesting in the roof void, under solar panels, in gutters or on the window ledge
- Birds or nestlings have recently left a nest, or nesting material has been removed
Why Bird Mites Become a Problem
Bird mites do not live on people, but when their bird host leaves they move toward a blood meal and can survive for weeks without a host. They are barely visible — under one millimetre, pale grey to dark red after feeding — so bites are usually noticed long before the mites are. Mites in a bedroom or living area cause significant sleep disruption, ongoing skin irritation and distress, particularly for children and sensitive occupants, and the problem will not resolve while the nest source remains.
Where We Commonly Find Them
- Roof voids and ceiling cavities beneath bird nests
- Windowsills and window frames near nesting ledges
- Beds, cots and soft furnishings beneath ceiling access points
- Under solar panel arrays and in gutters
- Air conditioning units, vents and exhaust fans
How We Inspect for Bird Mites
We trace the source first — locating active or abandoned nests in the roof void, under solar panels, in gutters, on ledges and in vents — then confirm mite activity at harbourage points and entry routes into living areas, including windows, cornices, ceiling light fittings and vents. Identification matters: bird mites are frequently mistaken for bed bugs, fleas or scabies, and treatment is very different for each.
How Bird Mites Treatment Works — From $395
Treatment begins with physical removal of nesting material and droppings — mites cannot persist in the building once the source is gone. We then apply a residual insecticide to accessible harbourage and migration paths: roof void surfaces around the nesting site, ceiling junctions, window frames and sills, skirting boards, cornices and affected soft furnishing edges, following label directions and re-entry requirements. Source exclusion, such as bird proofing the nesting site, is recommended so birds do not return.

Areas We Treat
- Roof void and nesting site surroundings
- Ceiling junctions, cornices and light fittings
- Windows, frames and sills on the affected side
- Skirtings, beds and soft furnishing edges in affected rooms
How Long Treatment Takes
Inspection and treatment generally take 1–2 hours depending on how far mites have spread. Two treatments are commonly required 10–14 days apart to break the mite lifecycle, because eggs and newly hatched mites survive the first application.
What to Do Before Treatment
Do not use insect bombs or surface sprays yourself — they scatter mites into further rooms and can make the problem worse. Strip and hot-wash bed linen and clothing from affected rooms, vacuum mattresses, carpets and soft furnishings and dispose of the vacuum bag, clear access to the roof void and identify where birds have been nesting.
What to Do After Treatment
Stay out of treated rooms for the re-entry period advised in your report, do not wash or vacuum treated surfaces during the curing period, keep washing bedding and clothing regularly, and arrange bird proofing so the nesting site cannot be reused.
When Follow-Up Treatment May Be Required
A follow-up treatment 10–14 days later is usually required to kill newly hatched mites and confirm the source has not been reoccupied. If nests were removed but birds return to the same site, exclusion work must be completed before the problem can be considered resolved.
Bird Mites Treatment Cost
Bird mite treatment is $395 to $495 depending on dwelling type and how far mites have spread from the nesting site. Removal and disposal of nesting material, roof void access and the number of affected rooms all influence the final cost, which is confirmed in your written quote.

Pricing Notes & Disclaimers
- Depending on your location, a travel surcharge may apply, and depending on the extent of the infestation, an infestation surcharge may apply. Any applicable surcharge is always confirmed in your written quote before work proceeds.
- Pricing: All prices are standard/indicative unless confirmed in a written quote. Pricing assumes normal access, standard property condition and infestation level, and that the dwelling remains within the stated allowances.
- Additional Charges: Additional rooms, wet areas, garages, sheds, secondary dwellings, oversized structures, commercial-use areas, difficult access, severe infestations, specialist access equipment and properties outside stated size allowances may attract additional charges. Travel and infestation surcharges may also apply.
- Results: Pest management reduces and controls activity but cannot prevent all future entry or reinfestation. Environmental pressure, neighbouring properties, weather and conducive conditions can affect results.
- Warranty: Warranty does not replace preparation, sanitation, maintenance or proofing obligations. Failure to engage recommended follow-up re-attendance treatments to break breeding cycles on active infestations will void any stated warranty coverage.
- Follow-Up Treatments: Some pests require multiple treatments because of biology, lifecycle, infestation severity or reinvasion. Follow-up visits are chargeable unless expressly included in the quoted program or warranty.

Prevention Advice
- Bird proof nesting sites — mesh under solar panels, gutter mesh, spikes on ledges and sealed eaves and vents
- Remove and dispose of old nests and nesting material rather than leaving them in the roof void
- Screen vents, exhaust fans and roof void access points so birds cannot nest inside
- Inspect the roof void and solar panel area each spring before the breeding season
- Treat bites and wash bedding promptly, and call for inspection if bites continue after nesting material is removed
