Signs You Have Birds
- Birds nesting in roof voids, solar panels, gutters or signage
- Accumulated droppings on roofs, ledges, air conditioners and outdoor areas
- Noise at dawn from nesting birds in the roof or under solar panels
- Damaged roof tiles, insulation or wiring from nesting activity
- Foul odour and staining from droppings and nest material
Why Birds Become a Problem
Bird droppings are acidic and corrode metal, paint and roofing. Nesting material blocks gutters and poses fire risk near electrical fittings. Droppings carry bacteria and fungi including Histoplasma and Salmonella. Birds also introduce lice, mites and fleas into roof voids.
Where We Commonly Find Them
- Under solar panel arrays
- Roof voids and ceiling cavities
- Gutters, eaves and roof ledges
- Signage, awnings and building facades
- Air conditioning units and vent openings
How We Inspect for Birds
We inspect for nesting sites — solar panels, roof voids, gutters, signage and ledges — assess the bird species (protected native species require different handling to feral species), and identify the proofing and deterrent solutions suited to the location.
How Birds Treatment Works
Treatment involves humane nest removal, installation of bird proofing — mesh under solar panels, spikes on ledges, wire mesh over vents and gutters — and surface cleaning of droppings where required. We use physical exclusion, not poisons, and work within NPWS regulations for native species.
Areas We Treat
- Under solar panel arrays (mesh exclusion)
- Roof voids and nesting sites
- Ledges, awnings and signage
- Gutters, vents and entry points
How Long Treatment Takes
Bird proofing takes 1–3 hours depending on the number of sites and access requirements. Solar panel mesh installation is the most common residential treatment.
What to Do Before Treatment
Clear access to roof void and subfloor, note where birds are nesting or roosting, and secure pets. For solar panel proofing, ensure roof access is available and safe.
What to Do After Treatment
Keep away from treated areas for 24 hours, dispose of removed nesting material as advised (it may harbour mites), and monitor for any birds attempting to access alternative areas.
When Follow-Up Treatment May Be Required
A follow-up at 2–4 weeks confirms proofing is effective and birds have not relocated to a new area of the property. Additional proofing may be needed if birds find alternative access.
Birds Treatment Cost
Bird proofing cost depends on the number of nesting sites, access requirements (height, roof pitch) and the proofing methods required. Solar panel mesh is the most common residential treatment.
Prevention Advice
- Install mesh under solar panels before birds begin nesting
- Seal gaps in eaves, vents and roof lines before spring breeding season
- Install gutter mesh to prevent nesting in gutters and downpipes
- Use physical deterrents — spikes, netting or wire — on favoured ledges
- Do not feed birds or leave food scraps outdoors
