Signs You Have Mosquitoes
- High numbers of mosquitoes at dawn and dusk, particularly near water
- Itchy red welts from bites on exposed skin
- Mosquitoes resting in shaded vegetation during the day
- Larvae (wrigglers) in standing water such as pot saucers and drains
- Buzzing sound in bedrooms at night
Why Mosquitoes Become a Problem
Mosquitoes cause painful itchy bites, disrupt outdoor living and sleep, and can transmit diseases including Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus, both present in the Hunter region. Coastal and lakeside properties are at highest risk.
Where We Commonly Find Them
- Standing water in gutters, pots and containers
- Garden ponds and water features
- Low-draining lawn areas
- Shaded vegetation around the home
- Under houses and in subfloors
How We Inspect for Mosquitoes
We inspect the property for breeding sites — standing water, clogged gutters, drains, ponds and low-lying lawn areas — and identify daytime resting sites in shaded vegetation, subfloors and structures.
How Mosquitoes Treatment Works
Treatment applies residual spray to shaded resting sites in vegetation, eaves and subfloors where mosquitoes shelter during the day. We also identify and advise on eliminating or treating breeding sites. For properties with water features, larval control may be recommended.
Areas We Treat
- Shaded vegetation and garden beds
- Eaves and shaded external walls
- Subfloor and under-house areas
- Around outdoor entertaining areas
How Long Treatment Takes
A mosquito treatment takes 30–60 minutes. Residual protection lasts several weeks depending on weather, vegetation density and proximity to breeding sources.
What to Do Before Treatment
Remove or empty all standing water sources — pot saucers, buckets, blocked gutters and children's toys — mow lawns, and clear access to shaded vegetation and subfloor areas.
What to Do After Treatment
Avoid watering treated vegetation for 24 hours, keep children and pets away until treated surfaces are dry, and continue monitoring for and eliminating standing water.
When Follow-Up Treatment May Be Required
Follow-up is recommended every 4–6 weeks during peak mosquito season (October–April) for properties near water or bushland with persistent pressure.
Mosquitoes Treatment Cost
Mosquito treatment cost depends on property size, vegetation density and proximity to breeding sources. Seasonal programs are available for high-pressure properties.
Prevention Advice
- Empty or cover all containers that hold water weekly
- Clean gutters regularly to prevent water pooling
- Screen rainwater tanks and water features
- Keep lawns mowed and trim dense vegetation
- Use screens on windows and doors and seal gaps
