Signs You Have Possums
- Heavy thumping and crashing sounds in the roof void at night
- Loud screeching and fighting sounds, particularly during breeding season
- Droppings and urine stains in the ceiling or on external walls
- Damaged eaves, roof tiles or vents where possums have forced entry
- Garden damage — stripped foliage on favoured plants
Why Possums Become a Problem
Possums in roof voids damage insulation, wiring and plasterboard, create odour from urine and droppings, and cause significant sleep disruption. They are protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act and must not be harmed — illegal removal or relocation carries fines.
Where We Commonly Find Them
- Roof voids and ceilings
- Wall cavities
- Under solar panels
- Garden sheds and garages
- Garden beds and ornamental trees
How We Inspect for Possums
We inspect the roof void for possum presence and nesting, identify all entry points in the roof, eaves and vents, and assess whether a possum has dependant young (pouch young) that must be considered before removal — removal is only humane when dependant young are not present.
How Possums Treatment Works
Possum removal is done humanely using one-way exit doors installed over entry points so the possum leaves but cannot re-enter. Once confirmed gone, we permanently seal all entry points and recommend installing a possum box in the garden to provide alternative shelter and prevent re-entry attempts.
Areas We Treat
- Roof void entry points
- Eaves, vents and gaps in the roof line
- Under solar panels (with mesh exclusion)
How Long Treatment Takes
Possum exclusion installation takes 60–90 minutes. The one-way door remains in place for 7–10 days, after which we return to confirm the possum has left and permanently seal entry points.
What to Do Before Treatment
Do not attempt to catch or relocate the possum yourself — it is illegal. Clear access to the roof void and subfloor manholes, and note the times of night when noise is most active.
What to Do After Treatment
Keep the one-way exit door in place for the full 7–10 days before permanent sealing, do not feed or encourage possums, and monitor for any remaining sounds that may indicate a second possum or dependant young.
When Follow-Up Treatment May Be Required
A follow-up at 7–10 days confirms the possum has exited and all entry points are permanently sealed. A further check is recommended after sealing to ensure no new entry points have been created.
Possums Treatment Cost
Possum removal cost depends on the number of entry points requiring sealing and whether possum box installation is requested. Legal compliance and humane exclusion are included.
Prevention Advice
- Seal gaps and holes in the roof, eaves and vents before possums find them
- Keep trees and branches trimmed at least 1.5m from the roof
- Install a possum box in the garden to provide alternative shelter
- Secure compost bins and do not leave pet food outdoors
- Have roof voids inspected annually as part of pest maintenance
