How Termites Damage Timber
Termites consume cellulose in timber, eating along the grain and leaving a honeycomb of hollow galleries. They prefer softwood but will eat hardwood, plywood and even some plastics. Damage is often hidden behind intact surfaces.
Structural vs Non-Structural Damage
Damage to structural framing, floor joists, bearers and roof trusses compromises building safety and requires professional repair. Non-structural damage to skirting, architraves and door frames is easier to repair but still indicates an active or past colony.
What to Do About Damage
First, eliminate the termite activity and establish protection to prevent further damage. Then assess the extent of damage — this may require invasive access. Structural damage should be repaired by a licensed builder. We coordinate with builders where needed.
