Reduce Moisture
Termites are attracted to moisture. Fix leaking taps, improve subfloor ventilation, direct stormwater away from the building, and address rising damp. A dry subfloor and perimeter significantly reduce termite attraction.
Remove Timber-to-Ground Contact
Remove formwork timber left in subfloors, store firewood off the ground and away from the house, avoid timber mulch against walls, and ensure structural timbers do not touch soil. Replace timber retaining walls and garden edging with non-timber alternatives where possible.
Garden and Building Perimeter
Keep vegetation away from exterior walls, avoid attaching timber directly to the building, and ensure weep holes in brickwork are clear of soil and mulch. Maintain a clear, dry perimeter around the home.
Install a Protective Barrier
A chemical soil barrier or physical barrier during construction or renovation provides the strongest prevention. For existing homes, a chemical barrier or monitoring system is recommended.
